APPEARANCE.
Nunnally is fifteen years old, and her age is apparent in her looks. She has large violet eyes, and long voluminous sandy brown hair. She often wears her hair down, but has taken to braiding it in Drift Fleet with the help of some friends. She is slender, pale skined, and very delicate in appearance. While she is generally remembered as short, she is actually 5'2", although one will never see her standing. She suffered debilitating wounds as a young child, and is constantly wheelchair bound. Thankfully, Code Geass universe ha sick wheelchairs, and she can generally manage to get around well enough.

Here in Drift Fleet, she tends to dress plainly. She wears basic loose dresses or simple tops with skirts. Due to limited supply of soap and hot water, her hair isn't in the bet of states, but she brushes it more than usual, and braids it with the help of Nel and Zelos on a regular basis. She often wears it as two braids, or a single thick braid down the center of her back.
PERSONALITY.
When described by others in the show, Nunnally is often referred to as a ‘gentle soul’. For example, if you asked what she wishes for more than anything, she would say world peace without even a hint of irony. She is just simply the kind of person who wants nothing more than for everyone to live in harmony together. When you hear this about her, you might think that she is naive or sheltered, but this is far from the truth. While she was born into a life of royalty, that privilege demanded a heavy price. She lost nearly everything in a matter of days—her mother’s life, her father’s love, the only home that she had ever known, her sight, and her ability to walk.

Hardship like that might break another person, but it only forged Nunnally into a strong and determined young woman. It’s easy to assume that she is weak considering her condition, young age, and gentle demeanor. However, she believes strongly in her convictions, and she will not easily back down from something that she believes in. Please note, it’s important to keep in mind that when I say that, I do not mean determined in the traditional sense. Nunnally is not a bulldozer, and she is extremely empathetic. She is always aware of the feelings of those surrounding her, and is very gifted when it comes to reading people. So when there is something that she believes strongly in, she will guide those around her and convince them to share her gentle viewpoint with a quiet passion. This does not mean that she is serious all the time, Nunnally is actually very playful in her own way. She enjoys teasing the people that she loves, but never enough to actually hurt anyone’s feelings. She also uses this sense of humor coupled with her ability to read complex people and situations to resolve conflict big or small. She will rarely raise her voice or yell unless emotionally distraught, and she is generally the kind of girl who will keep her passions quiet and hidden.

The reason for this is simple, when you get down to it Nunnally is a girl who suppresses a lot of emotions. Just like any other human she feels emotions like anger and sadness, but she represses these feelings for the good of others. She processes her deep feelings internally so that she can give the world only kindness—the world that has given so little to her. While a part of her must feel some resentment to her unfortunate lot in life, she seems to cling to optimism, and instead cherishes the good things that she has been blessed with. Her friends and loved ones, especially her brother Lelouch, mean the world to her.

We see in season two she is led to believe by Schneizel that Lelouch has betrayed her as Zero, and this cuts her deeper than anything else possibly could. It’s in this time that we finally get to see a different side of Nunnally, and crack the sugary sweet shell that she builds around herself. When she’s filled with deep, deep heart crushing sadness, instead of crying or pleading to Lelouch, she tries to put on a brave face. She shows determination laced with anger instead of a weak face. It isn’t until the very end, where he uses the ultimate form of betrayal—cursing her with the Geass—that she actually screams at him, as she desperately tries to chase him down a set of stairs.

But even so, even though she was hurt and betrayed to her very core, she never stopped loving and hoping that Lelouch would prove her wrong. That somehow this would all be a trick, and they would return to their old life. In those last few moments before Lelouch dies, Nunnally finally realizes what he was trying to do, and I think the fact that she recognizes his goals speaks volumes about who she is. Someone who was truly hurt and full of bitter feelings would not have realized the truth, or they would have stayed angry at Lelouch. Instead Nunnally cries for him, and makes sure that he knows how much she’s always loved him.

In the end, Nunnally is a strong girl who will fight in the unique way that she can to protect the ones that she loves. No matter what happens, she loves her family and friends very deeply, even if the true passion of her feelings is not apparent. She is sweet, loving, and full of hope for the future. While she is still a touch naive, she is determined to learn more about the world so that she will not be a burden on others. This shows a deep-rooted sense of responsibility, and a strong heart that will serve her well as the future Empress.
HISTORY.
In the world of Code Geass, the Holy Britannian Empire is a mighty force that rules a majority of the world. Their royal family is equally formidable, one where an emperor will have many wives and concubines, and even more children. He encourages them all to fight each other for the throne under the philosophy that the strong should domineer the weak.

This is the family to which Nunnally was born. 87th in line for the throne, Princess Nunnally vi Britannia was the youngest daughter of Marianne and younger sister to Lelouch. Marianne, Nunnally, and Lelouch lived together in a grand mansion. The two children didn't want for anything, and often were able to play with some of their step-siblings who were close in age. But this short time of peace and happiness came at a heavy cost. When Nunnally was seven years old, her mother was shot right in front of her-- assassinated. Covered in the blood as she lay underneath the dead body of her mother, legs riddled with stray bullets, Nunnally passed out and did not open her eyes when she woke up. The doctors said that her blindness was psychological, caused by these traumatic events. She might open her eyes again one day, but there was no way to be sure. Furious, Lelouch went to confront his father. How could the most powerful man in the world let one of his wives be assassinated by sneering nobles who looked down on Marianne for her commoner birth? Charles laughed at his face, and disowned Lelouch and Nunnally. Officially, he sent them as emissaries to the nation of Japan, but in truth they were political hostages.

For a few years, Nunnally and Lelouch lived a simple life in the Kururugi household. The shift from a life of luxury to living in the Japanese countryside was a sudden change, but the children were able to find some happiness. The siblings befriended Suzaku Kururugi, and the three enjoyed a myriad of adventures together. That was, until Britannia threw away all pretenses of kindness to Japan, and began their vicious invasion. Lelouch knew that no Britannian aid was coming for him and Nunnally, the emperor didn't care if they lived for died. So Lelouch came in contact with the Ashford Family, a noble Britannian family who were planning to put down roots in the new Area 11 (formerly Japan). The family gladly took in Nunnally and Lelouch, and the two changed their last names so that they could start anew, as average Britannian students at Ashford Academy.

They lived a peaceful life there for years, until Lelouch discovered the power of Geass and decided it would be fun to take down the Britannian Empire to build a world where Nunnally could live in peace. She remained unaware of his actions for the majority of Season 1, knowing only that he was spending more and more time away, and that he was being caught up in something dangerous. Along the way a crazed Geass user named Mao kidnapped Nunnally to get revenge on Lelouch, but he and Suzaku were able to save her in time. Lelouch continued to keep a distance from her as his responsibilities as Zero grew... Until Nunnally was kidnapped again. But this time the culprit was a mysterious boy who was working directly with the emperor.

Lelouch was captured in his attempt to rescue her, and Nunnally was brought to the Emperor. While we don't know exactly what transpired between the two of them, it ended with Nunnally being brought back to Britannian custody, and we see her again a year later as the new Governor General of Area 11. Lelouch knows that this decision was made because the Emperor knows he can't fight with his full strength against his sister, but Nunnally is still unaware that Lelouch is the feared terrorist Zero. When they come into contact Nunnally insists that she asked to become the new governor of this area so that she can bring peace through the government. As the series continues Nunnally continues to remain opposed to Zero, and eventually when she learns of his identity as Lelouch she still sides with her brother Schneizel. Even though his plan of using a giant terrible Warship called Damocles to strong-arm everyone into peace is cruel and will result in many deaths, Nunnally agrees to bear the sin of firing the warship's devastating cannon in the name of making peace. But Lelouch confronts her and although she opens her eyes in a desperate attempt to understand him, he uses his Geass on her and orders her to hand him the key to the ship. After winning the battle Lelouch becomes emperor of the world, and Nunnally is imprisoned for defying him.

Eventually she and the other prisoners are sentenced to execution, but the procession from the prison is halted by a figure in the distance... Zero. It turns out that Suzaku and Lelouch had a plan all along, Lelouch would become the 'demon emperor' and gain the hatred of the common people. Suzaku would then play the part of Zero and dethrone him. Then, the hatred in the world would die with Lelouch and the world would move forward. As Lelouch is stabbed and his body tumbles down to where Nunnally is, she touches his hand and realizes that this was his plan all along. In his final moments of life she tells him that she loves him, and sobs as the crowd cheers for the Demon Lelouch's death. Aided by 'Zero' Nunnally is made the new Empress of the Britannian Empire, and it is implied that she will be instrumental in ushering in a new era of peace and kindness.
